Let's talk about the difference between TFTs and LCDs. The two terms are often both used to describe the same thing. This is not wrong, but it's good to know the real significant difference between them.
In essence, a TFT is used to build an LCD. And a TFT LCD is a type of LCD using the TFT technology. Are you following? Let's get into some more detail and find out the difference between TFT and LCD.
An LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display, is a flatpanel display that uses liquid crystals wedged between two layers of polarizing material. An LCD display uses the light balancing qualities of these crystals. Today LCDs are used in a great number of products and applications. Your TV, computer screen, calculator, cell phone and the dreaded alarm clock are all made of an LCD flatpanel.
The connection between TFTs and LCDs is starting to become clear. But how does the TFT technology work? TFT stands for Thin-Film Transistor. It is a transistor that is sometimes used to build the LCD screen. A TFT is created by combining thin films of a semi conductive active layer with a dielectric layer that works as an electrical insulator. These layers are then placed on a supporting layer together with metallic contacts.
